India and England have met six times at various stages of various world cups and the overall score is 3-3. India take on England in Bangalore on February 27 in the 2011 edition and it remains to be seen who takes the lead. Incidentally, the game was shifted from the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, to the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore.
England won in 1975, 1987 (semifinal) and 1992. India returned the compliment in 1983 (semifinal), 1999 and 2003. The teams did not meet at any stage in 1979, 1996 and 2007.
Dennis Amiss (137) in 1975 and Graham Gooch (115) in 1987 remain the only century makers in India-England encounters. Eddie Hemmings’ 4 for 52 is also the best bowling for England. Mohammad Azharuddin’s 64 in the 1987 semifinal match is the best batting show while Ashish Nehra’s 6 for 23 in the 2003 group A match is the best bowling show for India.
And the 2011 team skipper MS Dhoni somehow forgot Nehra’s name when asked who are the ones who were left out of the 11 against Bangladesh in the opener.
